Chapter 19 - Initiations

It was early, just a few minutes… I mean, one quarter, past noon, and there weren’t many people here. I found out later that there just weren’t that many people. If this were a for-profit situation, there would be no way that you could justify this for the ten or so people who used it. But these ten people could afford anything they wanted. When I thought about it this way, it seemed pretty reasonable. Any one of these people could afford to build a private version of this pool, snack bar, and gardens for themselves. Sharing it with even a few others made it a bargain.

The pool was big. There was an island in the middle. There was even a waterfall and waterslide at one end. You’d see this at a big resort where you might have several hundred vacationers using it all at the same time. Here they had lounge chairs for up to 20 sunbathers. Six round tables with chairs were arranged near the snack bar for meals and conversation. Out on the island, I could see four large, covered loungers that gave protection from the sun, set around a group of palm trees and tropical plants. It was a really nice place.

Sue said, “What about lunch first?”

A woman walked up to us, smiling broadly. Topless. Like everyone in the village, she was very attractive. A short apron around her waist over the top of a bikini bottom was all she wore. I guess I hadn’t expected that she would be wearing even that much.

She said, “Hello, Sue. Are these our newborns? I’m Tanya. Welcome. It’s cool you came to see us. I mean that in the least weird way possible. We don’t freak out about language too much. Nobody thinks you came to look at us. Toss whatever clothes you don’t want to wear any place you want. It’s totally safe. There are shelves in the restrooms for stuff, if you prefer. If you need to change. I take it you want to start with lunch?”

Sue felt like we were her guests, so she took the lead and said, “Yeah. Thanks, Tanya. Are you guys cool if Tanya just brings whatever she wants to?”

Tanya said, “Anybody vegetarian? We kind of don’t bother with menus. The cook just makes what they feel like. You just tell me if you want salad, a sandwich, or a burger. The details are left up to the cook. Sort of family style. You come to our house and eat what the hostess makes. It makes us feel like a family.”

I said, “Wow, that sounds really nice. I feel kind of like a sandwich, but I’ll eat whatever you are making. Cool. That feels…I don’t know, friendly.”

I heard someone yell, “Max!” and we all turned to see who was calling me. It was Holly, my neighbor. The one that had brought me cookies that first day.

Running up, she took my hand and then greeted all of us. I was a little relieved that she didn’t hug me just yet.
